SWMCC will host a pre-Valentine's Day field trip to Springfield Wickman's Gardens at 2:00 pm Saturday, February 11, 2012. Come join us as we spend a couple of hours in the greenhouse photographing flowers. Wickman's Gardens is located on S. Fort between Sunshine and Grand Avenues. The address is 1345 S Fort, Springfield MO.
Though not required, it will assist in planning if you let me know if you are able to attend. You may email me at field_trips@swmocameraclub.org. Bonnie at Wickman's has asked for confirmation on Friday, February 10, so please email me before that date.

January 7 Field Trip

There will be a Field Trip to the Wheaton MO area on January 7 to photograph eagles. We will meet at the NW corner of the Wal Mart Supercenter on West Sunshine at the West Bypass at 5:00 am and carpool from there.
Dan DuLany and Guy Fox report there were a large number of eagles in the area the week before New Years Day. Local residents suggest we arrive early for the largest numbers.
If you are interested in attending, please email Terry Burns at swmcc.secretary@sbcglobal.net. Though not required, this will assist in planning.
I look forward to seeing you at 5:00 am January 7.

November 12th Studio Portrait Session

A studio portrait session, co-lead by Tim Buchanan and Rich Smith, will be held 12:00 noon to 5:00pm on Saturday, 12 November in the conference room at the Brentwood Library.

There will be two teen models (female) modeling for this session. We plan to set up two separate shooting areas within the room so that two groups can shoot concurrently. All studio lighting equipment will be provided. You need only bring your DSLR.

This is a “time for pictures” arrangement wherein participating club members will be asked to provide final digital image files to the models on a CD. A session model release will be signed by the models and their parent(s). This model release will also be signed by all participating photographers.

The objective of this portrait session is to provide club members with an opportunity to learn and practice various studio lighting and posing techniques. As no room-cleaning deposit was paid, only basic drink and snacks will be allowed in the conference room (no hot foods in cookers, etc).

Hulson mill civil war days

This will be a great photo op for anyone interested in getting shots of people dressed in Civil war time clothing, they sometimes have a fashion show for the ladies to show off the fancy dresses of that time. The gun fire and canons are neat also. This will start at 9am on Sat and end Sunday afternoon. I plan on going out Sat morning so if anyone wants to tag along shoot me an email or call me (827-5543)

To get there take 160 west once you go past Everton watch for signs. you turn off to your right. If you get to Greenfield you missed the turn off.

Buffalo river trip

The fieldtrip to Ark this past weekend was great. Even though i was sick and feeling miserable I had a wonderful time, The waterfalls were flowing nice and the dogwoods were in full bloom, couldn't have been prettier. The high light for my was the time at Rita's lodge. It was a wonderful to have a place we could all set and share stories together and Rita is a great hostess. To top it off cho-cho Charlie grilled tri-tip steaks, corn on the cob and baked patatos Friday night that was out of this world. I think Charlie has earned a new nickname "Chef Charlie". He may know a lot about trains but he also knows his way around a grill [thanks Charlie]. So if we ever get to have another trip like this i highly recomend it. Thanks again Rita and Charlie

Tulips at there peak

I was asked to notify you when the tulips at Evangel were in full bloom. They are at about their peak right now. You are welcome to come onto the campus and take photos. If a security officer asks you what you are doing, tell him/her that you are on campus taking photos of the tulips and meniton my name. All the buildings are locked at 5 PM, but you can walk anywhere out side the buildings.

Sunrise field trip

There is a 5:45 am sunrise field trip planned to Wilson's Creek on May 7th. We will meet at the front entrance of the park at 5:30 am. Here is a reminder of the calendar competition categories, (1) Scenic, (2) Plants or Animals, (3) People of the Battlefield, (4) Digital Enhanced (open category), (5) Historic, (6) Re-enactment: this category is for after the 1st deadline for the Ozark Electric Co & the Wilson Creek Calendar, and the last category is (7) for all youth 16 yr old or less. The youth category is for camera club family and the public to enter. The first deadline for all categories except the re-enactment is Due Aug. 11th. This is a 2nd Thursday Meeting. Please bring all printed photos (8x10 matted with BOTH sides of the velcro on the back, all 4 corners) and cds (formatted for calendar size of 8.5 x 11) to this meeting. You can enter 2 photos per category. Anyone who has youth entry photos and cds can bring them to me also on this date.

Directions to Ash Grove are go north on west bypass (highway 160) continue through Willard. Stay on 160 for about 10 miles and you will come to Ash Grove. at the first stop sign you will see Clares Station on your right, that is where we will meet.

If you have questions or the weather is bad you can call me at 827-5543 for last minute updates. Just because it is raining in Springfield doesn't mean it will be raining in Ash Grove. If we do decide to cancel due to weather we will have it on Sunday afternoon.

Meet about 10-20 minutes till 3pm at Clair's C Market - the Cenex gas station in Ash Grove. (This is my mom and dad's store located at Hwy 160 and V.) The actual address is 100 W Boone Street if anyone is GPS'ing it. For those who would like to talk about posing, business strategy, etc. let's have a casual round-a-bout at 1:30pm. We can discuss what some of us have done right and what some of us may have learned the hard way. For those wanting to do this please encourage them to bring a lawn chair. If it's nice weather we can talk on the lawn behind the store. If cold we can do it inside my dad's garage.

I would like to encourage anyone interested in portrait photography to attend this if you can. If you are experienced at this already we may need your help if several attend and need one on one help. Jenny has some great locations picked out around Ash Grove that should provide some great photo ops for anyone not interested in portraits. One of the locations she has picked out is the old Phoenix marble quarry; this is something you can only get into if you know the owner. If time permits we can go to Holston Mill which is about a mile from an eagle’s nest that I believe has eggs. So this should be a great trip with lots of photo ops and a chance to learn and share.

Had a wonderful field trip on old Route 66 today lead by club member David Eslick. Dave changed his plans took us East instead of West in order to miss the rain. Turned out that was a smart move on his part. I can’t tell you where all we went ( you’ll have to ask Dave that) just know we went East toward Rolla. I do remember the first stop was at the town square in Waynesville. Throughout the day we saw several old cabins, bridges and buildings along the once prosperous Route-66. It was interesting to hear Dave tell the history along the way and listen to him visit with people we met as we stopped at different places. The highlight of day for me was when he took us to the Elbow Inn for lunch. I knew we were in for a treat when we pulled up and the sign in the parking lot in front of the Inn said “Harley parking only all others will be crushed or towed.” The inside was just as unique and the Bartender was full of stories and knew a lot of local history about Route-66. The waitress was awesome and served me one of the best Brisket sandwiches I’ve had in a long time. As you will notice in the group photo below of us and the waitress the ceiling décor was quite interesting. I am sworn to secrecy as to whether or not any of the ladies in our group added to the décor. The rain finally caught up with us and we had to miss the last two stops Dave had planned for us. If Dave ever leads another Route-66 trip I highly recommend it.

Hopefully we will have more photos from others on the trip.

Fieldtrip to Wheaton

Monday the 21^st several of us braved the weather ( burr it was chilly) and went to the Wheaton Stella area looking for Eagles. We found several and the guys with long Glass got some good shots and as allways had a great time talking photography over lunch. I think everyone had a good time and one important lesson was learned. Car tires and eye glasses don't mix well (tires 1 glasses 0) for more info on this see photo below or talk to our treasurer, it did seem to hamper his menu reading some but with some help he was able to get enough for lunch.

Field Trip to Stella and Wheaton to Photograph Eagles

We will meet on the northwest corner of the WalMart Supercenter parking lot at the West Sunshine and West Bypass intersection. We can carpool from there to the Stella, Wheaton area and look for eagles. Then If some want we could drop down to Roaring river and check that area out also. We will find a greasy spoon somewhere for lunch. I am not familiar with the area so if someone knows of one speak up. I figure we will be back mid-afternoon but I don't have to be to work until 7:30am Tuesday so I am open to whatever the group wants to do.

MSU Archives

A few members of the club visited the MSU archives the evening of December 14th.

The photo archives are open to the public until March 15th 2011 and is located in MSU's Meyer Library. The hours are M-F 8 am to 5 pm with extended hours on Tuesdays to 9 pm. Endings -2010 - MSU Archives

David Eslick is leading a trip to the MSU archives in the Meyer Library on Tuesday evening December 14th. Meet inside the library at 7 pm. You may park in the visitor parking lots on the MSU campus.

This trip will conclude a wild year of field trips. Teresa and I have tried to offer some that were out of the ordinary, I hope we were successful. Thanks to all who participated. I didn't get to share pictures as much as I had hoped and my October move to Fort Scott put a damper on the end of the year but I hope everyone had a good time. I enjoyed watching the slide show last night and seeing pictures of our various trips come up. I especially want to thank my volunteer leaders who helped us cram in a few extra trips...couldn't have done it without you!

Pow-Wow at MSU

The Native American Pow-Wow is going on at MSU's McDonald Arena. Dancing will run from Noon until 10:30 pm on Saturday the 20th and from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday the 21st. Teresa and I have been there this morning and we got some neat pictures of the vendors set up and so pre-activity shots.

There is a suggested $3 donation to get in and bring money for the vendors. I got some great Caribbean Red Beef Jerky...of course I have never met a beef jerky I didn't like.

Cameras are permitted but it is proper courtesy to ask before taking photos of Native Americans. Some do not like or want their images captured.

Some photos will follow as I get them processed.

Pow-Wow! And an Update on Smallin Cave

MSU will be hosting its annual Native American Pow-Wow on November 20th and 21st. Once I get a full schedule I will be planning a field trip there to McDonald Arena. We started the year at MSU and we may finish the year there!

I have cancelled the trip to Smallin Cave as we had not generated enough interest to get over the $300 mark.

Soccer Trip to Mount Vernon, Fall Color an Added Bonus!

Crissy Carsten has volunteered to lead a field trip in my continued absence from the field trip scene due to work. Please support her!

We will be going to Spirit of 76 park in Mt Vernon. It is located at 400 North Main Street. I will meet everyone at McDonalds in Mount Vernon its right off of the main Mount Vernon exit on Mt Vernon Blvd on the left hand side of the road at 9:10. We will be leaving McDonalds no later than 9:25. I have included a screenshot of the exact location of the soccer fields if people want to come later. The games start at 10:00 and are usually over around 1:00 depending if everything starts on time. There will be ages 4 to 18 playing all the teams are Coed. I will be working the games so once the games start until I have breaks I won’t be able to assist much. There is a concession stand and restrooms at the fields.

Also for the fall color part of the trip there is a park with a small pond and walking trails just a little bit past the park on Main Street it will also be on the right side of the road. I can show people where this is prior to the games starting. Also for the church, cemetery and honey creek part if this is something we want to do it’s a few miles outside of Mt Vernon go back towards I44 and keep going and it will be on the left hand side of the road. I can show everyone where this is I just won’t be able to until I am finished with soccer.

These are the directions for those that want to come later or can’t meet at McDonalds.

Take the Mt. Vernon exit keep right. Turn right on Hickory Street follow that until you get to the square follow the one way direction of the square and turn right on Main Street go approximately 2 blocks and the park is on the right hand side of the road. You will see a gazebo and some play ground equipment walk past that and the soccer fields will be located directly behind that.

A Trip to the Studio of Paul Speed Photography

Continue across the old bridge past the Mill.

Take the next right onto East McCracken Rd. and immediately take

the first driveway on the right. This is a shared driveway. (Blacktop at the beginning)

Go on up the hill to the back of the property. See the red barn. You're there.

The World Wide Photo Walk - 2010

On July 24th many SWMCC members participated in Scott Kelby's 2010 World Wide Photo Walk. The photo walk is a good opportunity to meet other photographer's in the area and inform them about the club and what it has to offer.

This is this years group photo! We had a great time although it was VERY hot. Many of the participants suggested I write Scott and see if he can find a different time of the year for this. :)

A Lofty Field Trip

Teresa had a wild idea after representatives from the National Weather Service came to do a talk at the Study Middle School Library Summer Program.

Why not take pictures of a weather balloon launch? Here is your chance on Wednesday evening July 21st at 6 pm.

The directions to the National Weather Service are as follows:

From the West By Pass, drive west on Division Street - it turns into County Road EE. Basically, you are coming toward the new airport terminal. At the round about, take the second spur which continues Division/EE. You'll see the radar and upper air domes on your right. If you have a GPS, we are at 5805 West Highway EE.

Be there about 10 minutes before 6 pm.

An Interest Survey

An interest poll. A final field trip under my tour of duty is being considered for December. Smallin Cave in Ozark is available for rental at a rate of $300.00. What this means is if 10 people go it will be $30 per person. Would anyone be interested in attending this at this cost. We would be guided and have the cave to ourselves. Guides can help with flashes etc. Duration is about 2.5 hours. Email me at ozarkphotos@sbcglobal.net if you are interested at this price. I am hesitant to schedule anything this expensive without input.

On June 12th we had our first annual "strobists" type photo shoot. I have gotten enough pictures from participants to now post some of them. We had six models for the event. The lovely Sandy, Emily, Nikkia and Anna were our individual female models. Dashing Danny was our solo male model. And the great couple Jacob and Miranda where our glamorous couple of the evening. I know Emily has some photos that have been presented to her but I have not received any of them for the blog. I will post some of her when I get some.

The session was a follow up to an off camera flash seminar given at one of our second Thursday learning sessions by Matt Dewitt. We practiced what we learned that evening.

I want to thank everyone who sent in pictures. I have received some others on CD's which I have not gotten on here. I especially want to thank our terrific models and the wonderful job they did that evening! And a special thanks to Matt Dewitt who inspired us for the evening.

Last Minute News for the Urban Photo Shoot June 12

The biggest question I got last night is what should I bring? Well definitely bring your camera whether you have a flash or not. We will be working with some of ours as well as some shooting with things besides flash...at least I will. Even if you do not have a flash that can be triggered off camera bring it and you will learn how to use it more efficiently.

So bottom line is bring your camera, a flash or flashes, reflector if you have it and you may want to bring your tripod.

Meet us at 5:30 at the College Station Car Park at Campbell and McDaniel. Level one or two. I will have my KC Royals cap on so you should spot me.

Field Trip Announcement - Friday and Saturday June 25th and 26th - Conception Abbey

What do you have planned for Friday evening, June 25th? Nothing? Then consider joining us for another mini overnight camera club field trip at the CONCEPTION ABBEY in Conception, Missouri, 90 miles north of Kansas City, MO. We will be staying overnight in the Abbey with breakfast and lunch served buffet style at the Abbey on Saturday. A tour will be conducted by a monk as well as attending Eucharist, a Catholic Mass, at 11:15 AM. Bring your camera, however, no pictures may be taken during the service.

What will this weekend trip cost me? You can stay in a single room for a suggested price of $30 or a double room for $50. Each meal is paid by donation, with a suggested donation of $6 for breakfast and $7 for lunch. There is also a gift shop on the grounds. You can give more than the suggested amounts as a tax deductible gift to the abbey.

Since guest services are making special arrangements for our group, we need to know by Friday of this week if you can make this overnight camera club field trip. If something comes up and you need to cancel, or not eat with us in the abbey, then you will still need to pay for the room and meal as it will be prepared for you. You will need to pay us in advance as the abbey accepts only one payment for the group. Contact me at ozarkphotos@sbcglobal.net if you wish to go.

Don't let the religious aspect of the Abbey deter you from making this trip. While it will certainly be a part of the "experience" it is not a mandatory part of the trip. We plan to attend the 11:15 service for the experience...and they will need to know the number of us planning to attend that service. This will be a unique experience full of photographic possibilities far different than what we are used to!

We are also contacting a monastery in nearby Clyde, Missouri to see if we can also get a tour there, although their chapel is undergoing renovations so it will not be open.

Travel arrangements will be determined based on the number of people going.

We hope you will enjoy and take part in this, another of the unusual field trips we are trying to provide this year.

I am officially the walk leader for the Springfield location of the World Wide Photo Walk. If blogger has behaved you should be able to click on the title of this post and be taken to the Photo Walk Page for Springfield. You must sign up there to be able to participate. The limit is 50 walkers.

We will meet at 9am on Saturday July 24th at the College Station Car Park.

Urban Photo Shoot June 12th

We will be holding an urban photo shoot on June 12th as most of you know. This is a follow up event to the Second Thursday Meeting on June 10th with Matt DeWitt on off camera flash techniques.

I am in the process of finalizing details of the event. As of right now we have about 10 models lined up for the event. The models are male and female and couples. Their ages range from 13 to 50. Their experience varies across the board.

We will meet on June 12th at 5:30 PM in the parking garage across the street from the Hollywood Theater. This will be a rain or shine event. I had thought about a rain date but the logistics of that became too much. If it is raining we will confine our activities to the parking garages in the area.

The event will last from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM with later participation at the discretion of the models involved and individual photographers. As a participant you will be expected to provide two or three of your best pictures of each model you photograph to be loaded onto a CD for the model. You will provide the pictures to me with your name in the file name and I will build each models CD. This is their payment for the event so it is very important. I would also suggest you bring at least 4 AA batteries if not for yourself for the demonstrators whose flashes you may be using. Each participant is encouraged to bring their own flashes no matter what type it is. We will demonstrate and practice no flash, one, two, and three flash set ups.

More information will be forthcoming as I dream it up...until the 12th happy shooting.

We had a hot shoot at the Springfield National Cemetery's Memorial Day Service. Teresa and I could only attend the morning session which began at the National Cemetery and ended at the State Veteran's Cemetery. If someone has additional pictures please share them with us.

Eureka Springs Details

Well plans have a way of changing at least for me. Our youngest daughter has had an appendix removed so Teresa and I will be unable to attend the Eureka Springs field trip. Gerry Toler, however, has graciously volunteered to lead the trip and has supplied me with the following information:

From Gerry--

If the group wants to meet for dinner before the Illumination on Friday evening, I would suggest Local Flavor, downtown on Main Street, across from the Trolley Station, perhaps 6:00PM. We can still meet at the Inn of the OZarks to carpool.

Motel : Inn of the Ozarks, on Hwy 62 WEST, 479-253-9768; big water wheel in front of it.

Possible photo op's:

### the “Illumination”: Perhaps the “main event” (http://eurekaspringsgrandillumination.com) It opens Thursday evening, lighting ceremony at 8:00 PM. Members can see it Friday evening and Saturday evening, too.

## Historic walking tours. (Some easy, some very steep)

## Music in Basin Park , downtown, both afternoon and evening.

### Sunrise at historic Beaver Bridge , at Beaver Town , 6:00AM! Usually some fog on the water. May not be a “sunrise” due to weather. About 5-miles north.

### Crescent Hotel from the Overlook. Looks across the valley to the east facade of the hotel. Nice view, long lens would be good.

### Walk on Spring Street : springs, gardens, and architecture. (Morning light)

Includes Historic Carnegie Library on Spring Street.

## A number of historic Church Buildings.

Memorial Day Ceremonies

Sandy Reese is looking for help shooting Memorial Day (May 31st) festivities at the National Cemetery. The Marine Corp League of Springfield has asked us to photograph the Memorial Day ceremonies at both the National and State Cemeteries. We will make that an official field trip. Our schedule is as follows:

National Cemetery at Glenstone and Seminole 10am to Noon.
State Veterans Cemetery north of Evans Road on the James River 1 pm – 2 pm.

Sandy has all the ingredients for a successful field trip, she plans to do lunch at 2pm. Your selected pictures will need to be in a jpeg format and burned to a disc for presentation to the Marine Corp League.

Where do I even begin? Today we had our incredible session one trip to Eyeworks Photography. I don't want to give away too much information because we have a session 2 going on the 24th. More than one participant has told me this was their favorite field trip yet. So thank you Brian and Dena for sharing so much of your time and talents for a fantastic day!

Our model was the beautiful and talented Kwinni Glades. If you ever need a model I would highly recommend Kwinni.

I suspect everyone came away with some great practical ideas as well as a huge boost to their creativity.

A Day in North America - Mammoth Springs Arkansas and the Spring River

The following is a field trip that club member Charlie Dischinger is interested in leading. Please read the following that Charlie has submitted:

April 17th

Railroads Illustrated magazine has designated April 17th as Day in North America or DINA. On this day, they encourage everyone to go out and photograph their favorite railroad during that day and then submit their three best shots for possible inclusion in a future issue dedicated to pictures taken on that day. I am planning on going down to Mammoth Spring, AR on Friday the 16th and staying at the Riverview Motel that night so I will be there for Sunrise which should be at 6:36 AM on the 17th. The options are many for photographing trains in the area. The railroad runs along the north bank of the Spring River just behind the Riverview Motel and there is public access on the opposite side. There is always a very good chance of catching a trout fisherman in the river with a train going by. There is also an old depot by the lake just below Mammoth Spring as well as numerous other opportunities for good pictures. For those periods between trains, there are many other things to shoot in the area either in the State Park around the spring to the older buildings in town and of course the Spring River and fisherman.

Saturday evening dinner will be at Fred’s Fish House in Mammoth Spring. For those who have not eaten there, Fred’s is an institution like Chicken Annie’s. Only this time for catfish, hush puppies and green tomatoes. I will again be staying at the Riverview Motel Saturday night and not leaving to come home until Sunday afternoon.

Rooms at the Riverview Motel run from $42 to $56 a night with the more expensive rooms upstairs with a balcony view of the river and railroad tracks. If we have a large enough group, they might be willing to give us a discount on the rooms. There are a couple of other good restaurants in the immediate area for those who do not like catfish.

For those interested in going along, you have several options, if you wish to travel down to Mammoth Spring Friday afternoon with me, you are more than welcome. I will more than likely be stopping to take pictures of trains along the way. For those who wish to come down Friday night after work, we can arrange to meet at the Riverview Motel and those wishing to come down for just the day, we can make arrangements to meet at either Mammoth Spring State Park or at the River Access point on the south side of the river across from the motel.

I will work up a couple of maps of the area and provide them for those wishing to go along with my cell phone number in case we have trouble meeting up. It is about a two hour drive from Springfield to Mammoth Spring, so it can be done as a one day trip if you don’t want to spend the night. I should also have a line-up of trains for the day with a typical day having about eighteen trains during daylight hours. While the trains do not run on a schedule and the line-up will only give an approximate time, it usually provides a good of idea of when there will be lulls in the train traffic and which direction the next train will be coming from.

As stated earlier, there is a lot to shoot in the immediate area including Grand Gulf State Park less than ten miles away and west of Thayer or Hardy, AR just fifteen miles south of Mammoth Spring and the old store front buildings with many different shops. There should be something for everyone.

As luck would have it I have something planned that weekend so I cannot attend. Charlie is a published and well know railroad photographer so you would learn a lot about trains and railroad operations on this trip. I encourage everyone to take part in this unique opportunity and who knows you may get your picture published.

If you plan on spending the night at the Riverview, Charlie also asks that you let him know with in ten days so he can work on a group discount.

Final arrangements for Session 2 have been made with Brian. We will be going on Saturday April 24th and will need to be there at 1:30 pm. If you have already signed up and said you want Session 2 you are on the list. A Visit to Eyeworks Photography, Update

The first session was filled up within 12 hours and the second session, if not full is very close to full. I will do a tally in the morning. The response has been phenomenal for this trip! I will be making the final arrangements for session two tomorrow so I should be able to let my session two folks know the final time and date.

Remember there is a $5 per person model fee for this trip and both trips will more than likely include a meal. We will probably carpool from the Walmart on West Sunshine like we did the Pittsburg trip.

A Visit to Eyeworks Photography, April 10th

I am very excited to announce this upcoming field trip to Brian DeMints Eyeworks Photography in Joplin, Missouri. Brian DeMint has been recently featured in Photovision, an educational DVD magazine for professional photographers. Brian's work is a combination of great photography and fine art. Each model Brian works with becomes a work of art under the make up artistry of Dena DeMint, Brian's wife. What is even more amazing is the lighting Brian uses to accomplish his art. If you are expecting the latest in studio strobes, speedlights or Westcott lights, think again. You will just have to attend to see his lighting techniques.

Brian suggested we follow a complete shoot from the time the model arrives to the post processing. We will see the complete make up process, wardrobe selection, and of course the photographic session, along with post processing.

This field trip will be on April 10th and we need to be at his studio at 10 am. We will carpool and finish with a late lunch in Joplin.

Now for the fine print. This field trip is going to be limited to the first 15 people who sign up due to limited space in Brian's studio. The cost will be $5 per person to pay for the model we will be photographing. Most of the models Brian uses are college students who can use the money. Brian and Dena are contributing their time and talent.

To participate I will take the first 15 members who sign up by emailing me at ozarkphotos@sbcglobal.net You must email me to get on the list. Now the good news...if we exceed 15 people who want to go there will be or can be a second session.

I look forward to this trip and hope you do too. I think it may be the most unusual and entertaining trip we have had.

Oscar Night America

A few shots from Oscar Night America. An early group shot of those of us who participated minus Robert Hamilton and Guy Fox who arrived just after this was taken.

Robert was prepared for everything including his mini camera that actually flashed!

Glamour and glitz was everywhere just as it should be with the Oscars. I was at first concerned about the move from the Gillioz but it would appear from the attendance that it was well received.

KSPR 33's Natalie Nunn was set up just left of us and would help set pictures of couples up for us and interview some of the attendees.

It was a great night and I want to thank the club members who participated. We could have used a few more camera's as I had to recruit at least one non-club member. This was a service project and service and learning are the cornerstones of what this club is really about.

The Junior League of Springfield has asked for some of our pictures so some select shots will be going to them.

Oscar Night America Update

A quick update for Sunday's Oscar Night America at Hammon's Hall. We should arrive around 5:15 as some of the guests will begin arriving around 5:30. We will be shooting outside on the south side were cars arrive and drop people off.

They already have a photographer inside this year so we will NOT be shooting indoors. We are acting as the paparazzi and shooting pictures of the people arriving. Get your best shot of the arrivals and submit it to me and we will choose the best shot at an upcoming second Thursday meeting. This is a great opportunity to try your hand at off camera flash as what they really want is the flash factor.

Again I want to emphasize we will not be shooting indoors this year so other than to use the facilities we will not be going inside. Once the crowd dies down we are free to go. I estimate that will be around 7 or 7:30 pm.

I have about six or seven confirmed photographers and really need a minimum of 10. If you have not told me you are going please drop me an email at ozarkphotos@sbcglobal.net and let me know you are going. Dress nicely for this event.

Here are some of the overall shots of the seminar led off by the mandatory group shot and concluding with a shot of a guy filling his plate at lunch, hey wait a second...

The seminar is an annual event put on by Pittsburg State University's Student Association of Photographers (SAPS). The program consists of a photo contest with a high school category and an amateur category, four speakers and some fun events.

We got there a few minutes early and went over to the Kansas Veterans Memorial to shoot some photos. We attended the seminar and then got a tour of the PSU photo studios, classrooms, and printing facilities. They were very impressive! Following that we travelled to downtown Pittsburg to shoot some pictures in the fading evening light. Then we went to Chicken Annie's for a great dinner.

I have to admit that I have picked up a new nickname or reputation during this event. You may hear references to me as Wrong Way Mike or notes that if you go on a field trip with me pack a lunch because it will take a while to get there. One, or two, or was it three, little mistakes...

Eight rugged individuals got up early to get some great shots of the Lake Tanecomo Bridge at Branson which is in the process of being replaced. As photographers it is good that we get shots of these old places that may not be with us much longer.

As always I am thrilled with what I am seeing and it is so interesting to see each persons perspective on the subject at hand.

29th Annual Sertoma Chili Cookoff

Field Trip Lake Tanecomo's Highway 76 Bridge

Marty Preuss is going to Branson Saturday morning and he is inviting as many of us that wish to go! This will be a great trip as it will get you outdoors yet be close to the indoors. The bridge is beautiful and often times the lake adds its own drama. So read Marty's notice below and let him know if you are interested.

Field Trip: Morning photography of Lake Tanecomo's HIghway 76 Bridge. An internet photo of the bridge here. Photos till 9 - 9:30 (depending on conditions, find breakfast in Branson and return to Walmart between 11:00 - noon. The only certain condition - cold, (This is close to the Branson Landing.)

The kind folks at Wickman's Garden tolerated an invasion of photographers on Sunday February 7th. There was about 20 of us there at the peak of the invasion and it was so much fun to watch everyone approach similar subjects so differently. We even had guests attending as word about this trip got out.

This is the greatest job. I told Gordon it is almost as good as being a kid at Christmas; getting emails of pictures from these trips. I appreciate everyone who has attended the trips so far and look forward to the remainder of the year. Ok, now I have to come up with something for next week...

Tim Buchanan is the quickest of our Wickman Field Trip participants to get his pictures in. I suspect we will have a lot of images from this field trip so expect a lot of posts. It was a warm, green and moist environment we traveled to on Sunday and I think everyone had a good time. There were close to 20 participants making it the biggest field trip so far of the year.

Study Middle School Service Project

Well here it is the end of month one of 2010 and I am already behind posting results of the field trips. Where do all the hours in the day go?

On Thursday the 28th of January Ron Thornton and Elaine Miller took pictures at the Kitchen helping to document the Study Middle School service project there.

Above are a few of the pictures that Ron submitted. I think Ron made a few new friends and that he bridged the gap from his second graders to middle schoolers very well. Thanks Ron for submitting these shots!

Donating our time to school and community projects is part of why we are here. There will be more opportunities to do this as the year goes on. I hope we can donate our time and talent for good causes. Your next opportunity will be on March 7th for Oscar Night America. We will take pictures of that event which supports Isabel House.

Oscar Night America - Mark Your Calendars

As in past years our club has been asked to serve as "Paparazzi" for the local event which is to bee held on March 7Th at Juanita K Hammons Center for the Performing Arts. We should arrive at 5:45pm to start shooting pictures of arriving guests. While they really want us for the "atmosphere" and the quality of the pictures you take do not really matter I find it is a fun time to get some great shots of a lot of important people in Springfield. Teresa and I have done it now for about 3 years I believe and we have had a lot of fun. We also kind of hang around and take pictures later inside where guest are mingling.

This event has in the past been held at the Gillioz so please note the location change.

While they have asked for casual attire (no jeans) please note you will be under dressed compared to the guests. I would think we need to be more formal which means business casual at a minimum for the men and nice pants and blouse for the ladies.

This is a worth while project we can show off our club to the community with. I have committed a minimum of ten photographers for this trip. Please email me at ozarkphotos@sbcglobal.net if you can attend so I will have a headcount toward that goal.

Thursday January 28th Field Trip Update

Don't forget the Field Trip Thursday morning to The Kitchen or to the Salvation Army Thrift Store. If you happen to be available the time will be 9:30 to 11:30am. Please email me at ozarkphotos@sbcglobal.net if you plan on attending. Weather advisory...IF THERE IS NO SCHOOL FOR SPRINGFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS that day then there will be no field trip. If school is in session the field trip will take place.

MSU Field Trip Pictures Part 2

This is the next set of pictures from our MSU field trip. One of the things I love is how everyone looks at things so differently. I think this is the best lesson we can get from a field trip.

Okay Jacob, you are going to have to teach us how you got that picture with no tripod, at night and in the wind! Amazing. Jacob, by the way was our youngest attendee.

Eagle Days

I just saw the big signs on my way home today. Eagle days viewing is going on at Lake Springfield on the south side of town off of Evans Road. Just follow the big signs!

New Feature and Wickman's Garden Shoot

Ginger suggested a schedule for upcoming field trips be posted so I have added that in the list to the right. Thanks Ginger for that great suggestion...one of those "why didn't I think of that" moments! :)

I spent the morning checking out locations and have wrangled a couple which were on my original listing.

I am excited about the Wickman's Garden location as I think it will give you all a place to get creative and feel a touch of Spring in early February. We will basically have free run of the greenhouses and nursery. I imagine if you ask nicely you can get some shots in the florist shop too. This will be a great location for both normal and macro photography. I though it might be a neat location for a portrait session also if you know of someone who doesn't mind several people taking their pictures.

Service Project Field Trip

Our second field trip of 2010 is official. Study Middle School needs your help! Teresa will lead this trip.

The students at Study are doing a service learning project. They are doing service projects at The Kitchen on Commercial Street and the Salvation Army Thrift Store at Sunshine and Campbell. This opportunity will be on Thursday January 28th from 9:30am until 11:30am. I realize many of you are working, but if you are off or are retired this will be a fun project to practice your documentary photography skills.

Some of the photos you will need to take are a group photo, and general photos of the students working. All students attending will have a photo release on file at the school. Adult sponsors will be aware volunteers from the camera club will be shooting pictures at the event.

2-3 of your images need to be submitted for use in the school yearbook and for project documentation. These can be submitted to Mike or Teresa through email. You may have your copyright information on the image if you provide a release statement in your email.

It is important that we know who is able to attend this project. We are going to have an official sign up for this one. Please email me at ozarkphotos@sbcglobal.net to sign up. Please indicate whether you can be at The Kitchen or the Salvation Army Thrift Store for this one. You are not required to stay the entire 2 hours or if you wish you can spend an hour at each site if you choose to do so.

Above are some of the photos from the MSU field trip. We started off at what I call the Big Bear statue in front of the Plaster Student Union and proceeded toward Strong Hall. Along the way we discussed various things you can do to take night pictures successfully. I hope everyone got some new tips out of the evening they can use on their own. I hope that each field trip this year includes at least a little learning from each other.

MSU Field Trip - Braving the Elements

Here is the "mandatory" group shot of the crew that braved the elements on Tuesday evening to photograph MSU. Gordon and I were probably the only ones that managed to get a little wet! The rain did hold off until the very end. Photos taken on the trip are coming!

MSU Field Trip Update - Location Change!

Remember the field trip tomorrow evening at approximately 5:30 on the Missouri State University campus. Due to parking restrictions I have changed the meeting place to the Plaster Student Union at the big bear statue. Park in designated public spots in either parking garage or lot 13 off of National Avenue. Other options include neighborhood parking as well as University Plaza Hotel.

Hope to see you at the big bear statue tomorrow evening January 19th at approximately 5:30. We will shoot close to that spot first to give time for people to gather.

I am planning a field trip on Saturday February 27Th. This one will be to the Pittsburg State University Student Association of Photographers "Perspectives on Photography" Conference in Pittsburg, Kansas. The conference begins early and breakfast (donuts) and lunch are served. There will be a minimal cost to get in. I will be posting more information as I receive it. We will probably be able to car pool.

After the conference we will shoot in Pittsburg. Some places we might shoot are downtown Pittsburg, the Kansas Veterans Memorial, or Pittsburg State University.

We should be able to schedule a stop at Chicken Annie's restaurant to conclude our full day of photography.

So mark your calendars and I will send or post more information as it is available.
